To the 81 people (as of todays view #) who took the time to view this page, one would think you would note something down! After all, perhaps they (Mrs. Peck and Ms. Bode) read this or their children and grand children may read it.
You would think in post 9/11 people would have more compassion and take the time to note something down.
Mrs. Peck was a great 6th grade teacher and was filled with much compassion. I remember how excited she was the night we had the graduation ceremony at the High School. Things were so different back in the 50's.
Miss. Bode was the first teacher I had when we finally got to go to the Manor School. I remember she was very tall with short black hair. I think we were her first teaching class, this would have been 1957 to 58. She was always nice to me and Allistar Ritchie. I remember she even came to dinner at my house one night. Boy times have changed!!!!
Even though I lived close to the Manor, I along with a bunch of other kids was bused to the Jackson Ave school for 1st grade. I found out at the 03 reunion, the reason was due to, the school not banking on sooooo many baby boomers being born after WWII and the Manor was full. So, a bunch of us from around the block of the Manor and even the kids that lived up on Kiley Dr were bused to the Jackson Avenue school. For some reason I cant remember my 1st grade teachers name. It was on the first floor, the classroom was on the southeast corner of the building. She was short with short black hair. This is the only teacher whose name I cant remember. I can remember them bringing in milk for lunch in a milk box and I think we paid .02 for it. I also remember a coat room with hooks for our coats, hats, gloves etc.
I remember all my elementary teachers for some reason,
Miss Bode, Mrs. Rath, Mrs. Seigel, Mrs. Miller, and Mrs. Peck. I also remember Mr. DeBonus with great admiration.
Does anyone know if he was the 1st Principal there?
I remember Mr. Winslow was the boys gym teacher but I cant remember the girls. I remember Mr. Volvano from the Manor, however not sure why. His tan face, and deep raspy voice. He was a very committed man to all sports.
I dont know why, however there are many more people with raspy voices from up north then down here in the south.
I remember the Flutiphone (not sure on spelling here).
I remember summer school at the Manor, the fun summer school when we did things with plaster of paris, learned how to braid and make those things the coaches had around their necks with whistles on them, making jewelry and those crazy flowers out of that liquid stuff we would dip wire petals into. MR. GAYLON OR GAILON, tall jet black streight hair with black glasses, he was one of the summer school teachers, does anyone remember him?
If your out there Mr. Gaylon, thank you for giving up your summer to be with a bunch of elementary school kids.
Remember going to Jones Beach with this summer school? I think it was on Wednesdays that we went. Gosh, I must have been in 3rd or 4th grade and our parents let us go to Jones Beach by ourselves. I would never let my kid go by himself today, and yet our parents let US!!!!!! And the Wantaugh bus to the beach in the summers.
I was real quiet all through school, however for some reason I remember alot of things that others have just let slip by. I was not one of the smart kids in school and was always afraid to raise my hand. I was from a true Irish Catholic family and was the oldest of 6 kids. I have really good memories of growing up in Seaford and attending Jackson Avenue, The Manor, High school, Jr. High school and then back to the high school. Our class went to 7th grade in the High school because there was no Jr. High school built yet. Then half way through 8th grade they finished it and we went to the Jr. High. We graduated from there and went back to the High School for 9th thru 12th.
There are alot of teachers and parents to be thankful to for giving so much, back then. Seaford was a great place to grow up in. I've lived in Texas since 78 (transferred here with American Airlines Corp Headquarters) and you wouldn't believe what some people went through in the south and other countries during the same time. We had such a good sound base to start life with. The schools, teachers, administrators, the extra curricular activities we were afforded, the luxuries we had and the unbiased surroundings we grew up in. Yes, we were very lucky we were where we were, in a little town called Seaford on Long Island.
If anyone remembers the things I can't, feel free to fill them in. Does any one remember Civil Air Patrol Drills, and the signs that some houses had in their windows that indicated it was a safe place to run to if we were going to get bombed!!!! Like that would have helped. And the Bomb Shelters.
Now we no longer worry about the A bomb, we worry about one that will wipe out the planet. Only now the warnings are in color!!!
For me when I remember all the little things about growing up in Seaford, it takes me away from all the other worries that are lately surrounding all of us on a daily basis.
During these days, when we worry about the condition the world is in, the atrocities happening in other countries not just Iraq, the questionable future of our own country, our jobs, the jobs being outsourced to foreign countries, our health, the health of our children, the enviornment and even the water we drink, its nice to go back and remember ones childhood. For this writer, for some reason, it makes me feel a whole lot better.
A big thank you to all the teachers who taught in the Seaford schools and gave of their time and talents to all of us who are out there and who have good memories of our childhood.
This person who was very quiet as a child, has made up for it as an adult. I have traveled the world over and have witnessed countries with extreme wealth and extreme poverty, Caracus in 75 and Bangkok, Thailand in the 80's.
I fear that our country is on this path. The middle class is being squezzed to where soon there will be no middle class. There are so many things that every American should become aware of. Many of the civil liberties that we as children had and later as adults is being infringed upon.
Yes, I live in Texas where our current President is from and his father before him. Believe what you read about the schools here, they are a mess and the teachers are so consumed with the students passing the annual test, thats all they teach from, as early as 2nd grade. He is in 7th grade and a whole period is devoted towards kids going for extra help in the subjects where they didnt pass the practice TAAKS tests. My son looses 1 elective, because the schools will loose funding if all their kids dont pass the TAAKS tests in May. Special Education is also a mess here, I know because my son is High Functioning Autistic, which means he has a high IQ, however socially he lags behind. I have had many disagreements with school officials about his education. Many, many children in the Presidents home state are being home schooled because the state of Texas has failed many, many children and their families.
There was a PEACEFUL protest demonstration at the President's home town of Crawford, TX the end of October. These were people who opposed the war in Iraq. There were about 50 protesters there. It was a peaceful demonstration. However, the police were called and these peaceful protesters were met by police in anti-riot gear with billie clubs in hand. Several were hurt and SEVEN of the peaceful protesters were arrested. WHY?
I participated in my first Peace Rally a couple of weeks ago on the steps of the capital in Austin, TX. I heard about alot of people whose rights are being taken away. I heard from alot of Viet Nam Vets who couldnt find jobs after the war, couldnt get the medical attention they needed right after their releases from Viet Nam, have had to fight for whatever benefits they could get from the VA,
many were homeless at one time or another over the last 30 yrs.
Our country is in trouble. I implore those of you who just read at this site, to please make a difference and do something this upcoming election. Don't just stand by and read about what is going on, VOTE AND CHANGE THE ROAD OUR COUNTRY IS ON!!!
I have gotten involved in politics for the first time in my life.
Each and every one of us can make a difference.
Peace, Karen
