Donald Wahlberg (1971) Died Saturday January 17th. Memorial Service Sunday January 25th in Scarsdale, NY.
Donald was an accomplished person in his field (video editor), two EMMY's with NBC, one for the Olympics one for a news documentary, He never received a CLIO for the many commercials he did, but many of his commercials did. His company (Charlex) has been a regular contributor to Super Bowl half time commercials (also know as the super bowl of commercials in the trade) for many years now. Donald was at the top of his form.
Watching him work was like seeing the sorcerers apprentice in action. In fact that was one of his nicknames, the Sorcerer of West 47th street.
In addition to this he was an organizer for Americare and Habitat for Humanity in greater Westchester. Always busy, he worked on and ran jobsites to create affordable housing in greater Westchester for the past 15 years.
He was an attentive and adoring (not to mention adored) father and husband. A good brother and son in law. As a brother he helped all of us (my two sisters and myself) fix up and maintain many houses over the years. When money was short, he was always there.
A life long lover of music with a collection of Jazz, Classical and even folk that is truly staggering, on the order of 1,000 albums and cd's. A one time sound man, he had an excellent ear and stereo system to match.
He lived life as if he would live forever and die tomorrow. Loved by his neighbors, known as Don, Don the tool mon, he was the neighborhood fix it man.
Looking at his tool shop yesterday, seeing the multiple projects in flight I had the strong sense of a life interrupted. He would have wanted it that way.
He died building an ice rink for the kids in the back yard. It was a family effort as many of the projects around the house were. Mind you the family had no ice skates, but the using of a thing was secondary to the building of a thing for my brother.
He was only alone for a few minutes, they found him lying in the snow as if making a snow angel, apparent victim of a massive heart attack.
We are left with a gaping hole in our lives, but good memories and a solid example of a useful life.
