Do you remember Seaford ever closing for Snow Days? I don't! I remember the "7 inch" rule--less than 7 inches of snow and you had school! That doesn't mean we didn't have fun! I remember ice skating at Tackapausha Pond, snowball fights and watching the boys "skitching". There were some great snow storms in the '60's, while I remember little snow in the early and mid '70's. I remember ice storms and below zero freezing temperatures in '76 & '77, in my Junior and Senior years.

In the late '50s, early '60s, we had Cecil W. Fuller as our superintendent. He was from upstate NY and did not consider anything short of a full out blizzard any reason to cancel school. I can remember walking down Clark, across the "new homes" and on over to school because the snow was so deep between the Manor and the Jr.Sr. highschool that it was impossible.to cut across(with wool slacks under our skirts because we were not allowed to wear pants to school.)

The winter of '76 was a terror! Our class had the distinction of having a 2-night senior trip to Fernwood in the Poconos... The roads were impassable due to the snow and ice. It was a senior trip to remember!!

Taken verbatim from the "Kenora, Verona and Naomi Places" Seaford Living discussion page:
"The snowstorms !! I forgot about the great snows we had. School would be closed (naturally), some of us would make a ton of money shovelling snow for neighbors, and, in our case, when the LIRR would shut down it meant that our Dad was home. Once the roads were plowed, we'd go to Bethpage State Park for the BEST sledding this side of the Catskills. Then we'd load up the snow shovel and head off to the Mill Pond on Merrick Rd. in Wantagh and shovel off the ice so that we could skate. It was a real "community" affair with people from Seaford, Bellmore and Wantagh all helping out. If the Fire Department had already flooded Davis Field (on Waverly Ave.) then we'd shovel the snow off of it as well. At night we'd have a big fire and, sometimes, our parents would line up their cars along the edge of the field with their headlights on so we could skate after dark. It was really neat !!"

I graduated in 1970. I remember the school bus strike in the winter. We had to walk to school, and wonder of wonders, the girls were allowed to wear slacks. When there was no strike and we had to wear skirts, we had to kneel on the floor. If the hem touched the floor you were ok, if not, your parents had to bring "appropriate" clothing!

I remember winters past on long island. One or two good storms in the 70's.... I also remember the 'great hill' at Washington Ave. Park. (a killer of a hike back up.) Great times skating at the Duck Pond(Takapausha pond) and when i was really young...our yard on North Drive had a great hill....neighbors and cousins would come and sled down(we were just little then...what great times! I loved growing up in Seaford. (Downeys, Turbets, Allaires,Fickens,Rosalies,Scharfs,...and of course the Petersons! ;D We had it made....truly the good old days. Years later, we moved to Locust Ave....near the creek. Lots of great times there too...... When the snow hits here in MA....I still go sledding with my daughter to a nearby hill...it's a good one, but not nearly as good as Wash. Ave. Park

Are you guys crazy!!! The "hills" at Washington Ave were incredibly wimpy, even by 8 year-old girl standards! The best hills for sledding were 1) the end of the SOB on Ladonia (down the hill, through the gate, and across the street); 2) Cedar Creek Park; and 3) Bethpage golf course. Case closed!

Kathy, i remember that trip to Fernwood! I remember Mr Pulcini coming into our room and throwing snowballs at us, to get us up! Linda, Pat and Alice where in my room. If i look real hard, i could probably find the pictures we had taken there. I remember all of us listening to Cat Stevens Greatest hits on the bus ride up. We had a great time!!

Yes Marian..... I, too, fondly remember listening to Cat Stevens then and always "back then." Lots of good times at Fernwood with the runny eggs, backed up toilets and of course, running through the ice puddles to get to the pool.
Are you planning on attending our 30 year reunion? It should be a good time ~ "let the good times roll!"
