Class of '76............. we use to hang out at the "tree." There was actually a little tree on the other side of the fence in the parking lot at the HS where we use to hang out until the cops chased us.
One night we piled into Donny Spurrel's volkswagen and and drove over the HS football field, into the Jr. High field and onto Beech Street.........never got caught.
My dad thought "the tree" was a "ginmill."

In the early 70"s the tree was the spot to hang out before class. Do remember having lots of laughs before class. If anyone remembers me, please let me know. I am at a loss for names. Thanks Linda Vastola

When the High School was first built, there was a big oak or maple tree on the left side of the building (as you looked at it from the street) on the other side of the driveway that the busses went into. We'd meet there before homeroom to smoke. The tree was wide enough to hide one person at a time from the office window's view, so we'd take turns. Of course, the people living in those houses could see everything, but we didn't care. Back then there was no such animal as a Senior Lounge or a designated smoking area. You just took your chances. It was funny to see 15 or 20 of us all trying to get in a smoke one at a time in about 5 minutes.

Got caught more than once by Mr. Davey, the assistant principal. As wide as that tree was, he could still catch an angle from his office window and see the smoke. He once told me, smiling, "Either you were out there smoking again OR the tree was on fire. Either way, I'm going out to check."Got me every time.

To see the true "Tree" experience, check out the class of 73' yearbook. Great photo of some of us doing what we did best before school, Smoking at the tree.

Well, I admit to being a smoker in High School, but didnt usually smoke by the tree. My father passed by the school going and coming hme from work and I didnt want to get caught! I now run a group home ACROSS FROM THE TREE and I pointed it out to all of my staff.
